OUR CHAPTER
CONCORD ALUMNAE CHAPTER HISTORY
On Saturday, April 27, 1991, in the Kittie M. Sanson Chapel, on the campus of Barber-Scotia, 24 women came together to Charter the Concord Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated under the leadership of Patsy Nwagbaraocha, the chapter’s first president. These women spent an entire year trying to figure out how to best continue Delta’s rich legacy of service by establishing a new alumnae chapter. Knowing that there were several other members of Delta Sigma Theta both living and working in the Concord/Kannapolis area, the time was right to start and continue the work of Delta within their own community.
Many of the chapter’s programs and events continue to play a significant role in the upkeep, growth, and service within our community. These events include an African American Male Forum contributed to the Barber-Scotia College Scholarship, now known as the Concord Alumnae Scholarship, Voter Registration Drives, campaigns osted by the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), and Adopt a Highway in Cabarrus County. In May 1992, the Concord Alumnae Chapter held its very first Jabberwock, a notable Delta tradition. On January 15, 2022, the Concord Alumnae chapter was a part of the very first MLK Dream Day at Atrium Health Ballpark in Kannapolis, NC
Over the past 30 years, Concord Alumnae has made its mark in the Concord/Kannapolis area, and our presence is now a significant part of the culture. What started with 24 is now nearly 200 hundred members strong and we are even more committed to serving the diverse needs of the Cabarrus County Community. We are passionate about our work as we proudly continue the legacy of our 22 founders and fulfill the desires of our charter members by making a difference in the community we love
