OUR PROGRAMS

Since its founding in 1913 Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has clearly distinguished itself as a public service organization that boldly confronts the challenges of African Americans and, hence, all Americans. Over the years, a wide range of programs addressing education, health, international development, and strengthening of the African American family have evolved. In realizing its mission, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. provides an extensive array of public service initiatives through its

Five-Point Programmatic Thrust:

  • Economic Development

  • Educational Development

  • International Awareness and Involvement

  • Physical and Mental Health

  • Political Awareness and Involvement.

Economic Development

The current Economic Development program initiative of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. The Financial Fortitude initiative has ten components to include: Goal Setting, Financial Planning, Budgeting, Debt Management, Savings & Investments, Retirement Planning, Homeownership, Insurance, Estate Planning, and Entrepreneurship.

The initiative helps members of the Sorority spread financial education throughout their local communities.

Educational Development

Implements public service programs to impact the lives of the students we serve in a positive manner; creatively plan and implement relevant programs and projects; and encourage and stimulate academic and social development.

Programs include Delta Academy, Delta GEMS and EMBODI.

Delta Gems

A natural outgrowth and expansion for the continuation of the highly successful Dr. Betty Shabaaz Delta Academy: Catching the Dreams of Tomorrow, Delta Gems was created to catch the dreams of African American at-risk, adolescent girls aged 14-18. Delta GEMS provides the framework to actualize those dreams through the performance of specific tasks that develop a CAN DO attitude

The Delta GEMS framework is composed of components that form a roadmap for college and career planning. Topics within the components are designed to provide interactive lessons and activities that provide opportunities for self-reflection and individual growth. Delta GEMS, like Delta Academy, is implemented by chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

What Are The Goals Of Delta GEMS?

  • To instill the need to excel academically

  • To provide tools that enable girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success

  • To assist girls in proper goal setting and planning for their futures - high school and beyond

  • To create compassionate, caring, and community minded young women by actively involving them in service learning and community service opportunities

Who Can Participate?

The Concord Alumnae Chapter Delta GEMS program is open to female students in Cabarrus County who are between the ages of 14-18

International Awareness & Involvement

Through the International Awareness and Involvement (IAI) programmatic thrust, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. harnesses its vast potential to strategically impact the plight of people living across the diaspora. The five (5) primary focus areas include: IAI Sustainability Plan, IAI Webinars, World AIDS Day, IAI Newsletter and IAI Mission Trips

Physical and Mental Health

The DeltaCare initiative is an internal wellness initiative. It was created to promote self-care through physical wellness, emotional wellness, and awareness/advocacy. Specifically, the Red S.H.O.E. challenge is the physical health component of DeltaCare that encourages members to engage in healthy behaviors. S.H.O.E. is an acronym for Self-care, Healthy Options, and Exercise

We promote healthy living for our members and community through a myriad of creative programs designed to proactively raise awareness on major health and wellness concerns that disproportionately impact the minority community.

Making Waves for a Safer Future

Concord Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has partnered with the Kannapolis YMCA to launch the Crimson Swimmers Initiative—a program dedicated to equipping minority youth with essential swim skills.

Our Mission

We are sponsoring 20 second-grade students from GW Carver Elementary to receive six extended swim lessons at the YMCA.

Each child will also receive:

- A swimsuit, goggles, towel, and tote bag

- Transportation to and from lessons, provided by the YMCA

By providing these lessons, we are giving children the skills and confidence to be safe in and around water—helping to reduce drowning rates and create a healthier, safer community.

How You Can Help

Sponsor a Child – $110

Your sponsorship provides a child with everything they need for the program, ensuring they receive lifesaving swim education and the tools to succeed.

Promotes leadership, advocacy, and empowerment to effect social change and public policy. Each of Delta’s programmatic initiatives has an advocacy component that is implemented under the auspices of social action when it is appropriate or necessary to do so.

Under the auspices of the National Social Action Commission, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. continues to institute activities that foster:

  • Sponsoring Voter Registration and voter education programs

  • Combating Voter Suppression

  • The full restoration of voting rights for individuals who have paid their debt to society (ex-offenders)

  • Affordable Health Care and access to quality health care

  • Financial Literacy and Economic Empowerment

  • Support for HBCU

  • Political Awareness and Involvement

  • Gender Equality

  • Racial Profiling

Arts & Letters

The National Arts and Letters Commission was launched on September 24, 1973, under the presidency of 15th National President Lillian Pierce Benbow. Dr. Jeanne L. Noble, 12th National President (1958-63) and university professor, was named chair of the commission. Sorors Leontyne Price and Lena Horne were named co-chairs. The ultimate goal of the National Commission of Arts and Letters has been to boldly advance the black experience; highlighting the artistic contributions of African American people of the past and present and elevating them to public attention with particular emphasis on the positive roles of Black women. The programming is carried out via the Delta Authors, Delta Red Carpet, Pride in Our Heritage and Music Ministry subcommittees.
