Since its founding in 1913 Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has clearly distinguished itself as a public service organization that boldly confronts the challenges of African Americans and, hence, all Americans. Over the years, a wide range of programs addressing education, health, international development, and strengthening of the African American family have evolved. Economic Development

The current Economic Development program initiative of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. The Financial Fortitude initiative has ten components to include: Goal Setting, Financial Planning, Budgeting, Debt Management, Savings & Investments, Retirement Planning, Homeownership, Insurance, Estate Planning, and Entrepreneurship.

The initiative helps members of the Sorority spread financial education throughout their local communities.

Educational Development

Implements public service programs to impact the lives of the students we serve in a positive manner; creatively plan and implement relevant programs and projects; and encourage and stimulate academic and social development.

Programs include Delta Academy, Delta GEMS and EMBODI.

Delta Academy

The Dr. Betty Shabaaz Delta Academy provides an opportunity for local chapters to enrich and enhance the education that our young teens receive in public schools across the nation. Specifically, we augment their scholarship in math, science, and technology, their opportunities to provide service in the form of leadership through service learning defined as the cultivation and maintenance of relationships. A primary goal of the program is to prepare young girls for full participation as leaders in the 21st Century.

Delta GEMS

A natural outgrowth and expansion for the continuation of the highly successful Dr. Betty Shabaaz Delta Academy: Catching the Dreams of Tomorrow, Delta Gems was created to catch the dreams of African American at-risk, adolescent girls aged 14-18. Delta GEMS provides the framework to actualize those dreams through the performance of specific tasks that develop a CAN DO attitude.

The Delta GEMS framework is composed of components that form a roadmap for college and career planning. Topics within the components are designed to provide interactive lessons and activities that provide opportunities for self-reflection and individual growth. Delta GEMS, like Delta Academy, is implemented by chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Scholarship Opportunities

The Concord Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. provides educational funding for Black/African American high school seniors in Cabarrus County and/or Kannapolis City Schools who are interested in pursuing post-secondary education (i.e: 2 or 4 year institutions, trade schools, etc.).

Miss Jabberwock Pageant

The first Delta Jabberwock, an idea conceived by Soror Marion Conover of Boston’s Iota Chapter in 1925, began as a means of raising scholarship funds. This member of Iota Chapter presented a variety of performers who competed for monetary prizes. Thus, from this successful venture, Delta Sigma Theta’s Jabberwock event was born and became a part of Delta tradition.

Soon, Iota's annual production was adopted by chapters of the sorority throughout the country. Since that time, innumerable Jabberwocks have been produced by chapters in the United States and abroad. On December 28th, 1947, Jabberwock was formally adopted and copyrighted by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Delta Sigma Theta chapters have convened various organizations in the community for the express purpose of fostering positive relationships and providing an evening of fun and entertainment. The proceeds from Jabberwock are designated for scholarship and community projects. The Concord Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. proudly announces our upcoming 2024 Jabberwock, a scholarship program for young ladies in 11th-12th grades.

Today, the Jabberwock is a scholarship and personal development program with diverse and engaging cultural, educational and social activities to expand personal goals, self worth and self-esteem culminating with the crowning of one young lady as "Miss Jabberwock". Proceeds raised during Jabberwock will fund scholarships participants and community programs and projects.

International Awareness & Involvement

Through the International Awareness and Involvement (IAI) programmatic thrust, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. harnesses its vast potential to strategically impact the plight of people living across the diaspora. The five (5) primary focus areas include: IAI Sustainability Plan, IAI Webinars, World AIDS Day, IAI Newsletter and IAI Mission Trips

Physical and Mental Health

The DeltaCare initiative is an internal wellness initiative. It was created to promote self-care through physical wellness, emotional wellness, and awareness/advocacy. Specifically, the Red S.H.O.E. challenge is the physical health component of DeltaCare that encourages members to engage in healthy behaviors. S.H.O.E. is an acronym for Self-care, Healthy Options, and Exercise

We promote healthy living for our members and community through a myriad of creative programs designed to proactively raise awareness on major health and wellness concerns that disproportionately impact the minority community.

Political Awareness and Involvement

Promotes leadership, advocacy, and empowerment to effect social change and public policy. Each of Delta’s programmatic initiatives has an advocacy component that is implemented under the auspices of social action when it is appropriate or necessary to do so.

Under the auspices of the National Social Action Commission, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. continues to institute activities that foster:

Sponsoring Voter Registration and voter education programs

Combating Voter Suppression

The full restoration of voting rights for individuals who have paid their debt to society (ex-offenders)

Affordable Health Care and access to quality health care

Financial Literacy and Economic Empowerment

Support for HBCU

Political Awareness and Involvement

Gender Equality

Racial Profiling
